SUMMARY:Embodying Ethics: From Quiet Conviction to Courageous Action
DESCRIPTION:Making Lunches for the Homeless\nWhat does it mean not merely to believe in ethical values\, but to live them fully? \nAs the Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley celebrates its 20th anniversary\, we invite you to explore how ethical commitment can move from private conviction into public action. Through the stories of Paula Rochelle and Ben Wade\, we will trace two personal journeys from “quiet advocacy” to a bold determination to make ethics resonate in every part of life. \nTheir experiences invite each of us to consider: How do our values shape the way we speak\, act\, build community\, and respond to injustice? And what might change if we found the courage to embody our ethics more completely? \nJoin us for an inspiring celebration of 20 years of ethical community—and an invitation to imagine what comes next. Please RSVP on Meetup.

SUMMARY:Brunch Ethics: From Suffrage to Intersectionality: The Evolution of Feminist Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:How has feminism changed the way we think about freedom\, equality\, power\, and identity—and why do its debates remain so urgent today?\nJoin Curt Collier\, professor of philosophy at Fairleigh Dickinson University\, for a lively and accessible journey through the evolution of feminist thought.\nWe will begin with the “first wave” and the struggle for women’s legal and political rights\, explore the transformative activism of the 1960s and 1970s\, and consider the complex questions confronting feminist thinkers today. \nThis will be more than a history lesson. At each stage\, participants will be invited to examine the arguments\, share their perspectives\, and discuss how feminism has expanded\, challenged\, and sometimes divided our understanding of equality.\nNo background in philosophy is needed—only curiosity and a willingness to join the conversation. \nWe are meeting at a restaurant. Please be prepared to buy food. We meet outdoors under shade. Dress for the weather! See you there! Please RSVP on Meetup.

SUMMARY:ECSSV Book Club: The Gift of Not Belonging by Rami Kaminski\, MD
DESCRIPTION:From a renowned psychiatrist comes the first book to explore the otrovert personality—someone who feels like an outsider in any group\, regardless of its members—revealing all the advantages of being an otrovert and ways they contribute to the world. \nOtroverts are not natural born joiners. Unlike introverts\, they are not shy or quiet\, and do not quickly tire from one-on-one socializing. Yet in large groups they feel uncomfortable\, alienated\, and alone. \nThe Gift of Not Belonging urges otroverts to embrace their unique gifts\, and equips them with the knowledge and tools to thrive in a communal world. \nAll are welcome\, whether you have read the book or not. There is much for everyone to discuss and learn. \nA virtual meeting. The link shows when you RSVP on Meetup. If you need a passcode\, it is ethics.

Are those purposes still relevant? \nAmit suggested the topic so join us for the discussion. \nPlease be prepared to have your camera on\, a requirement of attending this virtual meeting. \nPlease RSVP on Meetup. SUMMARY:Grace Shelter Support: Sack Lunches!
DESCRIPTION:We provide 48 sack lunches to Grace Solutions every month\, which we make on the first Sunday. Look at the great art on the lunch sacks\, created by artists at a Grace Solutions Art Hangout! Please join us for lunch making and filling lunch sacks. \nWe make PB&J sandwiches and assemble sack lunches\, including snack foods (individually wrapped)\, drinks\, and fruit that the staff at Grace distributes over the next 10 days or so. We write personal notes in English and Spanish to include in the sacks. \nWhen we are done\, we gather with our own PB&J sandwiches and enjoy each other’s company as we eat the same meal we just packed in lunches for Grace\, an act of solidarity. \nThe plan: Gather at 12:00 noon PDT Sunday to make PB&J sandwiches and pack sack lunches with everything but the sandwiches and fresh fruit\, which will be refrigerated overnight\, and write notes. Tuesday\, Sept 8\, the lunches will be delivered to Phil at the Grace parking lot. We’ve been at this since June 2022\, and it has been a meaningful and fun project. \nWho can help\, one way or another? If you can join the sandwich making at 12:00\, RSVP and you will get the address through a meetup message. Want to contribute something to the lunches? RSVP and you will get details. \nPlease join us. \nI look forward to seeing you Sunday Sept 6 as we continue to support Grace this way. \nRSVP on Meetup to get details for participating as well as the address.
